Elephant in the room

Education has the biggest budget. The Education Department has a great many premises. Reduce the maintainance of school buildings by rationalising the number of schools. Only schools that are full should be kept open. The city cannot afford the luxury of schoos that do not have every class room being full.

Why the contribution is important

Education is important. With an aging population the budget should reflect that we have fewer children in schools. Closing school premises would not change staff pupil ratios nor affect standards.

I can't disagree more. The problem is not full classes but the lack of support for teachers in deprived areas who are having to parent children by teaching basic level skills that parents from lower SIMD areas struggle to teach. So many of the behaviour problems in the schools in the East End of Glasgow make for a system that simply cannot cope. The numbers of vulnerable children in our Glasgow Schools is on the rise. More children in a classroom will not help in the education process only make it more difficult.

This idea may seem good in theory, however - there are a number of schools in remote areas which if they were to close, would mean children having to travel further. This would affect the cost of living for vulnerable families who would have to pay extra to transport their children to/from school, or a free bus service would then have to be provided by the schools if these were outwith catchment areas, in turn costing the Education system (GCC) extra money anyway to buy or lease the transport, the fuel and hire the drivers . Last but not least, this would also lead to job cuts for qualified teachers who stay in Glasgow - which would do nothing but increase the unemployment levels in Glasgow

The last thing we need in Glasgow is to start stripping away at Education - all schools and Education should be protected at all costs.

This is insane!! If you start increasing class sizes you decrease the ability the teacher has to deliver an effective education - more children = less time spent with teacher. You are deluded to think "Closing school premises would not change staff pupil ratios nor affect standards".
