Congestion charge

A congestion charge for people driving their car into the centre of Glasgow.

Why the contribution is important

It will reduce traffic, raise additional funds, encourage people to use public transport, and make the city a nicer place to be.

'S e deagh bheachd a tha seo. Bhiodh e gu math feumail airson airgead a thogail agus airson na h-àrainneachd. Bu chòir cìs nas àirde a bhith ann air càraichean dìosail. Mholainn gun rachadh an airgead a thogadh seo a chosg air còmhdhail phoblach.

Totally agree. City is incredibly congested due to unrealistic car ownership and too many short journeys being performed for no good reason.

I have no huge issue with this idea in principle, however, it cannot be implemented until two things happen - one is that the public transport in the city needs to be enormously improved. The reliability of the bus service, the quality of the fleet, the overpricing is just scandalous. The second thing that needs to happen is a re-sequencing of the traffic lights. This will enable a much better flow of traffic through the City, thereby cutting congestion (in part). When these things have been sorted, then by all means introduce a congestion charge, because then those who need to be in the city will actually be paying for a better roads network. The only other caveat to this would be for those folk who actually live in the City but have a car. That they should be charged for living in the City, when that is being encouraged, but the need a car to get to work etc.,. then this is something which would need to be resolved as well.
